212-10402 Helmut Fidler: Jewish life in the Lake Constance region: A search for traces
Course info:
The historian Helmut Fidler takes the anniversary of 1700 years of Jewish life in Germany as an occasion to follow the traces of Jewish life in the Lake Constance region. The Jewish historian Bertold Rosenthal assumed that Jews lived on Lake Constance before the Alemanni. Finds and documents show that Jews have settled here in the region for at least 800 years. Their traces still shape many places today, even if the visitor to these places is not aware of this. The story of Jewish life on Lake Constance is a story of mutual respect and recognition as well as a story of displacement and annihilation. But it is always a story that transcends borders, and it has remained so to this day.
