Save the children
another view of the Gurs camp over 80 years ago
Lecture October 24, 2021
On October 22, 1940, the Nazis deported over 6,500 Jewish people from Baden, the Palatinate and Saarland, including 160 from Konstanz and Lörrach, to the Gurs camp in southern France. There are also over 560 children who are expelled from their homeland. The conditions in the camp, the malnutrition, a lack of hygiene and medical care, the desperation, the dead and the deportations to the extermination camps in the east from mid-1942 are remembered every year. Three quarters of the adult deportees did not survive the Nazi era. Many die in the Gurs camp, most of them murdered by the Nazis in Auschwitz.
