Course info:

Werner Haberland was born in Berlin in 1899 into a Jewish entrepreneurial family. His grandfather was a textile manufacturer, his father a property speculator and building contractor. While his brother Kurt diligently studied law, did his doctorate, joined his father's company and took it over after his father's death in 1933, Werner Haberland never completed his studies, but preferred to travel as a wanderer and dreamed of a self-determined life based on agricultural activity . He tried to make this dream come true in Überlingen. When his brother was arrested and finally murdered in Mauthausen concentration camp, Werner Haberland fled to Switzerland and became a teacher. After the war he returned to Überlingen and was able to get his property back, but continued to live modestly as a teacher at rural education centers. He donated his property to the Badisches Jugendherbergswerk and stipulated that the proceeds should be used to finance a Christian-Jewish or German-Israeli meeting place bearing the name Martin-Buber.

Oswald Burger, born in Meersburg in 1949, worked as a vocational school teacher and local politician in Überlingen. As a historian, he has researched contemporary history and in particular the history of the Goldbacher mine in Überlingen, for which he was honored with the Federal Cross of Merit. He was involved in the implementation of the "Jewish Culture Days Überlingen" and works as an organizer and mediator of literary events.
